The Patrol Operations Division is the foundation of the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office. A Patrol Deputy is on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ensuring continuous service to our community.
Patrol has been a core function of the Sheriff’s Office since its inception. Today, the division is organized to provide emergency response, investigate reported crimes, deliver specialized law enforcement services, assist citizens, and promote safe neighborhoods throughout Montrose County.
Patrol Deputies are often the first to respond to calls for service, making them the most visible representatives of the Sheriff’s Office. Their responsibilities include enforcing County and Colorado laws, conducting preliminary investigations, executing warrants, addressing traffic violations, and performing proactive patrols to maintain public safety.
Because a uniformed patrol deputy is often the first point of contact between the Sheriff’s Office and the public, deputies are expected to carry out their duties with honesty, integrity, and professionalism. To uphold these standards, each deputy is trained in the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, Colorado statutes, the Sheriff’s Office Standard Operating Procedures, and all county-wide policies and directives.
Given the county’s largely rural character, deputies are trained as generalists, handling a wide range of duties, from routine traffic enforcement to follow-up investigations of major crimes. They may also assist with search and rescue missions, participate in school and community events, support the Crime Stoppers program, and take on additional specialized roles such as Drug Recognition Expert, SWAT operator, or instructor in driving and firearms training.
In addition, Patrol Deputies regularly support other divisions of the Sheriff’s Office and partner with law enforcement agencies both within and outside Montrose County whenever needed.
