UPDATE from Coroner Dr. Thomas Canfield, MD on 8/24/18

In the early morning hours of Thursday, August 23, 2018, an inmate was found unresponsive in a cell at the Montrose County Jail. Multiple resuscitation efforts were initiated by staff. EMS responded to the scene and transported the inmate to the Montrose Memorial Hospital Emergency Department where he was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as Paulino Perez Martinez, 44, recently of Montrose.

The death is being investigated by the 7th Judicial District Critical Incident Team and the Montrose Coroner’s Office of Medical Investigation. An autopsy and multiple diagnostic procedures are in progress and although there is no evidence of foul play or trauma; the cause and manner of death are pending the results of those procedures.

Efforts to identify next of kin by the Montrose County Coroner’s Office of Medical Investigation and multiple law enforcement agencies have been unsuccessful thus far. Anyone who may know of a relative is asked to contact Dr. Thomas Canfield, Montrose County Coroner at (970) 249-7755.

Emergency medical services were called and deputies immediately began life-saving measures. The inmate was transferred to Montrose Memorial Hospital and was later pronounced deceased. The Seventh Judicial District’s Critical Incident Team and Montrose County Coroner’s Office of Medical Investigation are handling the investigation.
